physiology and psychology interwoven

“Reading People
¶ Learning to read men and women is a more delightful process than learning to read books, for every person you see is a true story, more romantic and absorbing than any ever bound in covers.

Learning to read people is also a simpler process than learning to read books because there are fewer letters in the human alphabet. Though man seems to the untrained eye a mystifying mass of “funny little marks,” he is not now difficult to analyze.

Only a Few Feelings
¶ This is because there are after all but a few kinds of human feelings. Some form of hunger, love, hate, fear, hope or ambition gives rise to every human emotion and every human thought.”

“Thoughts Bring Actions
¶ Now our actions follow our thoughts. Every thought, however transitory, causes muscular action, which leaves its trace in that part of the physical organism which is most closely allied to it.

Physiology and Psychology Interwoven
¶ Look into the mirror the next time you are angry, happy, surprised, tired or sorrowful and note the changes wrought by your emotions in your facial muscles.

Constant repetition of the same kinds of thoughts or emotions finally makes permanent changes in that part of the body which is physiologically related to these mental processes.

The Evolution of the Jaw
¶ The jaw is a good illustration of this alliance between the mind and the body. Its muscles and bones are so closely allied to the pugnacity instinct center in the brain that the slightest thought of combat causes the jaw muscles to stiffen. Let the thought of any actual physical encounter go through your mind and your jaw bone will automatically move upward and outward.

After a lifetime of combat, whether by fists or words, the jaw sets permanently a little more upward and outward—a little more like that of the bulldog. It keeps to this combative mold, “because,” says Mother Nature, the great efficiency expert, “if you are going to call on me constantly to stiffen that jaw I’ll fix it so it will stay that way and save myself the trouble.”

“Inheritance of Acquired Traits
¶ Thus the more combative jaw, having become permanent in the man’s organism, can be passed on to his children.

¶ Right here comes a most interesting law and one that has made possible the science of Human Analysis:

Law of Size
¶ The larger any part or organ the better its equipment for carrying out the work of that organ and the more does it tend to express itself. Nature IS an efficiency expert and doesn’t give you an oversupply of anything without demanding that you use it.

Jaws Becoming Smaller
¶ Our ancestors developed massive jaws as a result of constant combat. As fast as civilization decreased the necessity for combat Nature decreased the size of the average human jaw.

Meaning of the Big Jaw
¶ But wherever you see a large protruding jaw you see an individual “armed and engined,” for some kind of fighting. The large jaw always goes with a combative nature, whether it is found on a man or a woman, a child, a pugilist or a minister.”

“Exhibit a—The Irishman
¶ The large jaw, therefore, is seen to be both a result and a cause of certain things. As the inheritance of a fighting ancestor it is the result of millions of years of fighting in prehistoric times, and, like any other over-developed part or organ, it has an intense urge to express itself. This inherent urge is what makes the owner of that jaw “fight at the drop of the hat,” and often have “a chip on his shoulder.”

Natural Selection
¶ Thus, because every external characteristic is the result of natural laws, and chiefly of natural selection, the vital traits of any creature can be read from his externals. Every student of biology, anatomy, anthropology, ethnology or psychology is familiar with these facts.

Built to Fit
¶ Man’s organism has developed, altered, improved and evolved “down through the slow revolving years” with one instinctive aim—successful reaction to its environment. Every part has been laboriously constructed to that sole end. Because of this its functions are marked as clearly upon it as those of a grain elevator, a steamship or a piano.

“Survival of the Fittest
¶ Nature has no accidents, she wastes no material and everything has a purpose. If you put up a good fight to live she will usually come to your rescue and give you enough of whatever is needed to tide you over. If you don’t, she says you are not fit to people the earth and lets you go without a pang. Thus she weeds out all but the strong—and evolution marches on.

Causes of Racial Characteristics
¶ This inherent potentiality for altering the organism to meet the demands of the environment is especially noticeable in races and is the reason for most racial differences.

Differences in environment—climate, altitude and topography necessitated most of these physical differentiations which today enable us to know at a glance whether a man belongs to the white race, the yellow race, or the black race. The results of these differentiations and modifications will be told in the various chapters of this book.”

Interrelation of Body and Brain

¶ So today we see man a highly evolved creature who not only acts but thinks and feels. All these thoughts, feelings and emotions are interrelated.

The body and the mind of man are so closely bound together that whatever affects one affects the other. An instantaneous change of mind instantly changes the muscles of the face. A violent thought instantly brings violent bodily movements.

Movies and Face Muscles
¶ The moving picture industry—said to be the third largest in the world—is based largely on this interrelation. This industry would become extinct if something were to happen to sever the connection between external expressions and the internal nature of men and women.

Tells Fundamentals
¶ How much do external characteristics tell about a man? They tell, with amazing accuracy, all the basic, fundamental principal traits of his nature. The size, shape and structure of a man’s body tell more important facts about his real self—what he thinks and what he does—than the average mother ever knows about her own child.”

“Learning to Read
¶ If this sounds impossible, if the seeming incongruity, multiplicity and heterogeneity of human qualities have baffled you, remember that this is exactly how the print in all books and newspapers baffled you before you learned to read.

Not long ago I was reading stories aloud to a three-year old. She wanted to “see the pictures,” and when told there were none had to be shown the book.

“What funny little marks!” she cried, pointing to the print. “How do you get stories out of them?”

Printing looked to all of us at first just masses of meaningless little marks.

But after a few days at school how things did begin to clear up! It wasn’t a jumble after all. There was something to it. It straightened itself out until the funny little marks became significant. Each of them had a meaning and the same meaning under all conditions. Through them your whole outlook on life became deepened and broadened—all because you learned the meaning of twenty-six little letters and their combinations!”

REFLEXOLOGY

img_2392

Reflexology is an energetic foot therapy, that requires work on the feet and the reflex points. These reflect on specific areas of the body. The reflect points represent specific areas of the body itself as well as the organs and the glands. The reflexing of these specific areas creates a euphoric feeling consisting of relaxation.

Reflexologists work from the toes to the feet, heels, via a slow gentle progression reflexing the sides and the soles and then the tops of the feet. They also will work through points on the lower legs. These areas being worked allow the receiver, to feel an immediate stress reliever. The receiver learns that letting go, is the functioning tool to accomplishing this level of relaxation.

In ancient history, many cultures used healing the feel as a means for healing the entire body. Reflexology in Egypt- In Egypt, during the process of mummification they removed the souls from the feet that was known to free the soul to travel beyond the earthly planes into the astral planes.

In china, writings, as old as the fourth B.C, began to speak out on a therapy where pressure became applied to the fingers, feet , hands and ears.  (that was later called acupuncture)  Shogo Mochozuki- author and educator, tells us that in japan you can hear the proverb ” the foot is the gate of ten thousand different illnesses. The proverb illustrating the journey of reflexology, the ancient art was called over from china to japan. The Bible also mentions feet as a way of healing and to wash the feet of another was a symbol of humility and forgiveness.

Suggestion and It’s Power to Heal all Diseases

  • It is very difficult to determine the exact therapeutic value of any remedy, unless the element of suggestion in its application be carefully weighed and considered. A drug plus suggestion is very different from the same drug minus the suggestion. The real healing power resides within the patient himself, and any method that serves to arouse that inherent power will tend toward the cure. The method that is capable of arousing that power to the greatest degree is the best method for that particular patient.

  • There is a well known case of a “Sacred Bone” from the middle ages which had the wonderful power to heal diseases. This bone was brought from the Holy Land by two soldiers of the crusades, and was supposed to be a part of the remains of a saint in the new testament. It was only many years later when one of the soldiers confessed the truth on his deathbed that the real relic had been lost because they were drunk. Fearing to return home without it, they substituted the bone of a sheep.

  • Much to their surprise, the sheep bone operated just as well in its power to heal people. Therefore they agreed to keep silent about the matter. It was the faith and belief of the people about the healing power of the object that acted as a powerful form of suggestion to bring healing to their bodies through the power of their subconscious mind. But after the disclosure of the true nature of the relic, the cures ceased at once, and many of those who had been healed became sick again.

  • That is why Christ said it is your faith that makes you whole. He also said to the woman he had cured to go in peace which actually means to go into Shalom. A person once cured has to remain in a state of wholeness, peace and serenity of consciousness. Otherwise the disease would return or another one would occur. Health is a state of being and all disease is created by instability of consciousness and emotional turmoil. That is why it is called dis-ease, a lack of ease within that manifest without.

  • The greater the amount of emotive power and expectant attention that the healer is able to arouse in the patient, the better are the chances of a cure. Certain rituals and spiritual practices are the means to arouse such emotions and expectations. The proper way to use suggestion would be to let the patient know how it operates and then to use it to treat him. But sometimes they may be largely ignorant, and attempting to explain the scientific principles of suggestion may simply bewilder and mystify them.

  • Therefore the best way to treat a very ignorant patient is to cure him first and then explain as far as possible later. The best way to administer the suggestion of treatment is by means of any placebo accompanied by strong positive repeated suggestions of what the substance taken will do for the patient. Many cases reached this way could not be reached with ordinary suggestion because the patient wouldn’t understand it. A placebo instead of a pure suggestion would also assist the healing process greatly.
Disease is caused by the failure of cells to do their duty.
  • The trouble may arise from the inefficiency or rebellion of a single cell, which then spreads its contagion to those around it or else to a rebellion on the part of a group of cells. The disease is cured either when the rebellious cells are forced to resume normal functioning, or else when they have been discarded and destroyed and replaced by new healthy normal cells which perform the tasks that their predecessors have abandoned.
Excellent results may be obtained by assuming that the cells, organs or parts are “entities” capable of understanding the suggestions and are responding to them. There is mind in the cells and organs and parts, that is responsive to suggestive influence. This cells vary in intelligence and personality. The cells in the liver differ from the cells in the heart or stomach. Some respond to coaxing and gentle suggestions while others require more commanding and forceful suggestions to obey and obey they will.
Auto suggestion is suggestion given by oneself to oneself. All suggestion is really auto suggestion because the active force manifested in suggestion is called into play by the individual himself, usually involuntarily. The power is entirely within the mind of the person himself, although it may require assistance from some outside person to call it into effect. Many of the cures claimed by suggestion in its many forms are really due to the auto suggestion of the patient, pure and simple.

  • The nearer one comes to perfect playing out of the dual role of suggestor and suggestee, the better will be the result and the clearer will be the impression on the subconscious mind. Speak to yourself in the third person. It is as though God is speaking to you. Say to yourself “You feel energized and happy”, “Every part of you is filled with life and rejuvenating strength”, “You are strong, vibrant and well.” Let it be suggestion instead of affirmation, where the “I” of the person suggests to the Me.

  • All suggestions should be directed towards the conditions that are desired, rather than towards the eradication of the conditions that are not desired. Disease is not a thing in itself, it is merely the negation of health. Since all suggestions act towards the thing being suggested, the suggestion should be frame in a way that mentions only the desired condition and not the undesirable one. Steadily refuse to even talk disease and speak only along the lines of health and wellbeing.

  • The various affirmations, denials and statements of metaphysical practices are but forms of auto suggestion and their results are obtained along its lines. Each person may claim that his way is the true way and all other ways are counterfeits. Some even say that other ways may cure but only their way truly heals. But all forms of healing through different religious styles, spiritual practices and medical methods all have their common base of working, which is suggestion. It is the universal power of God.

Suggestion and It’s Influence over all Business

  • Suggestion is very prevalent in business. We are told “Uneeda Biscuit” or that “Coke is The Real Thing” or that “Puffer Cigars are Fragrant” or that “Have a Break, have a Kit Kat”. Everywhere we go, we are hit with messages containing some cleverly worded phrase, telling us either to do something or that a certain thing is true, in both instances the statement being connected with a certain product or idea. All these suggestions impress upon the public about the reality of the world whether true or not.

  • These advertisements seek first to arouse desire within us, and then to drive it home and transform thought into action by repetition of suggestion. There are some whose “want to” will be so vigorously aroused that they “must have it” in a day or so. Do not suppose for a moment that this clever advertising just “just happens” to catch your eye. These skilled advertisers, who are paid very large salaries, have been trained in the laws of suggestion, and they put their knowledge to practice every single day.
Did you think that you bought a certain product because you were convinced from careful examination that it was just what you needed? Perhaps, but the truth is you bought it because the scientific advertiser had exerted his suggestions upon you, first by attracting your attention, and then by the insistent and repetitive statements regarding the fact that you needed that particular product. Of course the product may be good and well worth the money but the principle of suggestion was still in effect.

  • The psychological elements of a sale are implemented in a certain order. First the attention must be secured or else the salesman can proceed no further. Then follows the stage of interest or curiosity, which must be aroused before desire may be awakened. To arouse interest, the offer must be presented in an interesting manner with well chosen and properly delivered words. Then the desire is aroused for it is the motive power which leads to sales.
  • The customer must be made to want before buying. Masters of salesmanship and advertising understand the law of suggestion through repetition. They will artfully get in repeated suggestions by presenting the same statements in different terms, or by a flat repetition of an authoritative statement until the idea grows to be an old story with you, and one you never seem to question. Knowing that this is the way marketing works, you will never run out of ideas to market the same products to the same people over and over again.

  • Before the salesman uses suggestion on people, he uses it on himself first. Through auto suggestion, he impress himself with the idea of the value of the goods he is to offer to his customer, the fact that these goods are just what his customer needs and should have in his business, the fact that instead of asking a favor of his customer, the salesman is really doing him a good turn by bringing these goods to his attention. The salesman has to be sold on the product first before he attempts to sell to others.
The salesman is also trained in the various psychological triggers that makes a person buy. He appeals to their desire for self improvement, recognition, convenience, social appeal, comfort, philanthropic aspirations and self gratification. It takes more brains to sell the goods than it takes to make them. Conviction may be imparted at will by those few writers who have closely studied the thought process by which conviction is induced. The mission of every ad is to convert readers into buyers.

  • Most people are just like everyone else. It is the natural inclination for people to blend in and be like one another. Original thought and individual style is more rare than generally imagined. Let a man show individuality of taste and action, and he will be looked upon as “weird”, “eccentric” and is avoided as “out of the ordinary” by the majority of people, unless he is sufficiently strong to force his ideas upon the crowd and thus set the fashion. Corporations create market demand by setting the trends.
There is a tendency for the race to “get in line” or to “follow the leader.” To act like human sheep or geese makes it easy for them to fall into the habit of accepting suggestions. It is said that if the leader of a flock of sheep jumps over a rail of fence, the rest of the flock will follow. But when the rail is removed, the rest of the flock will continue jumping over the place where the rail had been.
  • That is why people still do certain unnecessary things in business to overcome obstacles that no longer exist.
The value of a thing is usually formed by the suggestion of it. All products usually obtain their value by the suggestion of what they would do for their owners. That is why marketing is the key to all business transactions and commerce. Suggestion also influences what governments will do and the way people interact with each other. Suggestion is the force that rules the world more than anything else. Suggestion is the workings of consciousness, and everything is consciousness.
